Introduction
Aqsis is a high quality, photorealistic, 3D rendering solution. It complies with the RenderMan® interface standard defined by Pixar.

The RenderMan® standard has been used in film and television visual effects since it's introduction in 1989. Pixar has used their own implementation for all of their award winning CG features, and provided their implementation for use in the visual effects of most major blockbuster films over the last 2 decades. The Aqsis project offers a way for individuals and organistaions alike to gain experience with the RenderMan® interface without the cost of commercial software licenses.

Aqsis comprises a command line rendering tool, a tool for compiling shaders in the RSL language, a tool for preparing textures for optimal use, and various developer libraries to enable integration with third party tools.

Aqsis is licensed under the GPL license, with some parts under the LGPL.

Aqsis : Depth Mapped Occlusion Animation

Eric Back, the author of the MOSAIC plugin for Blender, has created a stunning example of the interoperation of Blender and Aqsis via MOSAIC. He's produced a fantastic animation showing depth mapped occlusion to great effect.

Aqsis : Aqsis 1.4.1 Released
Posted by renderguy on 2008/9/23 20:50:00 (575 reads)

UPDATED: The Windows installer has now been fixed, with all downloads now updated as of 29/09/08!

Thanks to a lot of hard work by many developers around the world, and a focus on more frequent updates, Aqsis 1.4.1 has been released!

This is mainly a bugfix release, resolving the following issues:

* Texture wrapping incorrect when texture isn't multiple of tile size.
* Fix a serious memory leak involving string arguments to DSO shadops.
* Added missing 'ndspy.h' include to Windows installer (NSIS).
* aqsistex segfaults when opening 2-channel greyscale TIFFs.
* aqsistex failed to set TIFFTAG_EXTRASAMPLES to identify alpha channel types.
* Fix a minor memory leak in CqDisplayRequest.
* Fix a minor memory leak in RiProcDynamicLoad plugin handling code.

... and more.

This is also the first release to be distributed as a 'Universal' binary for OS X (10.4 and later).

As usual, thanks goes out to all involved who've helped during this release.

Enjoy!

Aqsis : Better Than Rosetta!

Aqsis 1.4.1, due next week, will be made available as a 'Universal' binary for OS X users... meaning a single disk image (*.dmg) is all you need, irrespective of architecture.

The binary itself is designed for use with OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and later, as this is the minimum version supporting this approach from Apple Inc.

Enjoy!

Aqsis : Aqsis 1.4 Available for Download
Posted by pgregory on 2008/7/22 12:52:24 (1033 reads)

Aqsis 1.4

After a great deal of effort on the part of many people, we can finally present the latest stable release of Aqsis, 1.4.

This is a very significant release, including some major changes to functionality such as a complete rewrite of the texturing system, a new
framebuffer, and many many more changes and fixes.

This is probably the most stable and functional release we've made. We have a new release procedure in place that meant this release has
been rigorously tested and proven over a period of 3 months prior to release.

We've also managed to work closely with some key industry players to ensure Aqsis works well with the tools that the major studios rely on, such as Massive.

Downloads are available from SourceForge.

An overview of the major changes can be found here, and a more detailed description in the release notes here.

I'd like to thank everyone who has helped with this release, there has been a great deal of effort by many people. Not just coding, but testing and reporting bugs, working with partners to ensure proper support, documentation
and other area's that don't always get noticed. You all know who you are, so please give yourselves a big pat on the back, and accept my sincere gratitude.
